NBC’s Tim Russert dies of heart attack at 58
Washington bureau chief, ‘Meet the Press’ moderator collapsed on job

WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the
moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday after suffering a heart attack at
the bureau. He was 58.

Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” broadcast when
he collapsed. He was rushed to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, where
resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Russert’s physician, Michael Newman, said cholesterol plaque ruptured in an artery,
causing sudden coronary thrombosis.

Sportscaster Charlie Jones, 77, dies of heart attack

SAN DIEGO (AP) -Charlie Jones, the deep-voiced sportscaster whose career as a
play-by-play announcer dated to the beginning of the American Football League
in 1960, has died. He was 77.

Jones died of a heart attack Thursday at his home in the La Jolla district of
San Diego, his longtime agent, Martin Mandel, told The Associated Press.

"Charlie is one of the legends of sports broadcasting starting with covering the
first Super Bowl,'' Mandel said. "He had a wonderful kettledrum voice. He was known
for that and his versatility.''

Former Sen. Jesse Helms dies

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a North Carolina
Republican who became an icon to conservatives, died Friday at the age
of 86, a senior congressional source said.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, announced on its
Web site that he died at 1:18 a.m. Friday after having been ill in
recent years.

NFLPA head, Hall of Famer Upshaw dies at 63

NEW YORK (AP) - Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get
NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.

Upshaw's death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for
a quarter century.His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the
Oakland Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances.
Upshaw's biography was posted on the front page of the Hall of Fame Web site
Thursday along with his enshrinement speech from 1987.

Shoemaker Thomas Bata dies at age 93

Thomas Bata, owner of global shoe corporation that bears his name, has died in Toronto at age 93.

Leslie Tenenbaum, the company's general counsel, said Bata died early Monday in Sunnybrook Hospital only weeks before his 94th birthday.

Floyd founder Wright dies at 65

Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died aged 65 from cancer.

Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside
lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

He was part of a band with some memorable songs.

By the way, Wright, in the photo shown in the article, had a similar face to actor Anthony Hopkins. Curious resemblance!

Paul Newman, superstar who personified cool onscreen, dies at 83 after battling cancer

WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) _ Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as
an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," ''Cool Hand Luke"
and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said.
He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

In May, Newman he had dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues.

Paul Newman managed to get known for his pursuits outside of acting: salad dressings (proceeds went to charity) and car racing. The fact that he managed to keep his marriage going for so long is another noteworthy accomplishment.
