A bad day for CFL (Canadian Football League) and MLB (Major League Baseball) fans. Two deaths, at least one was preventable, perhaps both, but the CFL is not releasing much information.

A shooting outside of a southwest Calgary nightclub early Sunday has left Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks dead, the team has confirmed.

"Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff," the team's president and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement.

"It's a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan's family."

And in the US, Miami Marlins top pitcher has been killed in a boating accident that could have been avoided. What on earth would they be out at 3am and speeding around in the dark and no life jackets. Recipe for disaster and now his unborn child will pay the ultimate price with the loss of his/her father . The Marlins canceled their game today, whick makes this death even more mysterious, why would he be out in a boat at 3am, hours before a game.

Jose Fernandez, the ace right-hander for the Miami Marlins who escaped Cuba to become one of baseball's brightest stars, was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. Fernandez was 24.

Authorities said Fernandez was one of three people killed in a crash off Miami Beach.

Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near Government Cut. The bodies were discovered a short time later, and officials said speed played a factor.

In Miami, residents of Cuban heritage were in a festive mood over the news. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/fidel-castro-en/article117221468.html
The late Mr. Castro's policies caused many people to fill boats and to try to land in the US for better lives.

I'm seeing different information on Twitter about former and present world leaders' reactions to Castro's passing,
an unknown to me bit of history-Castro gave a Caribbean island to East Germany?-, and an American whose father
left Cuba due to Castro but is no longer alive to know of Castro's passing.

Here are the links:

The island's beach, quickly renamed Playa RDA (Beach of the GDR), was supposed to become a tourist haven during the cold winter months in Europe's east — a dream that never became reality.

As economic crises rattled the communist world, East Germans could not afford to travel to Cuba. The “Beach of the GDR” remained uninhabited.

Today, it has become a symbol for the end of communism. When tourists visited the island in 1998, they found Ernst Thälmann's statue toppled. The symbol of Cuban-East German friendship is assumed to have been destroyed in a hurricane.

A sad day for fans of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Greg Lake has passed away.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ ... 69-w454546

I listened to their music growing up, but I think my favorite is performed solo by Mr. Lake - I believe in Father Christmas. https://youtu.be/Lqwqknq7nuI

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Believe ... _Christmas

"I Believe in Father Christmas" is a song by Greg Lake with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Although it is often categorised as a Christmas song, this was not Lake's intention. Lake claims to have written the song in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas.[1] Sinfield, however, claims that the words are about a loss of innocence and childhood belief.[2]

Another shocker in the entertainment world. Carrie Fisher aka Princess Leia has passed away. The world knows her best from the Star Wars franchise, but she was so much more.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/st ... -1.3913356

Carrie Fisher, the Hollywood actress who portrayed the fearless Princess Leia in the Star Wars film franchise and later penned award-winning books that included touching on her battles with addiction, has died at age 60.

Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, released a statement through the family spokesman saying that Fisher died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," reads the statement from publicist Simon Halls. "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly."
