The black box revealed some disturbing news:

Non-crew members were in the cockpit of a plane that crashed killing the Polish president and more than 90 others, an investigation has found.

The question of whether the crew were pressured to land remains unanswered, an official said. One of those in the cockpit has been identified, but the BBC has learned it was not the president. The plane crashed as it tried to land at Smolensk in western Russia on 10 April, killing dozens of senior Poles.

He didn't need to be in the cockpit to pressure the pilots.

Some of the details of the plane crash, as reported by media sources, have been countered as inconsistent with information known to be true, according to people familiar with conspiracy theories, on the day of the crash and the routines relating to Polish VIP flights. The allegation is that the crash was a deliberate assassination of Polish leadership that were not in agreement with European Union policies. Also, there was a clergyman who died coming back from the president's funeral--seen as suspicious. Be aware that some of the information may be shocking to readers, as there is a transcript of the amateur video of the crash site that films gunmen.

A British story from last month covers the wartime incident in Katyn. It is gruesome in details, so beware that it may be difficult reading: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1266098/The-forest-nightmares-The-truth-Katyn-massacres--Britain-turned-blind-eye.html

When I saw the headline, I thought it was supporting the allegation that the plane crash survivors had met a similar fate at the hands of the Russians.

I saw this update on the crash, that the occurrence of it was placed entirely on the Polish side, with the general being blamed. No mention of the video that was posted on the Internet supposed showing live fire being shot at people near the wreckage. No mention of Russian factors involved with the crash. The matter seems to linger as a sore wound.

Russia blames drinking official for Poland president’s air crash

MOSCOW — Russian officials investigating the plane crash that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski placed the blame squarely on the Poles on Wednesday, saying the crew was pressured to land in bad weather by an air force commander who had been drinking.

Kaczynski and 95 others, including his wife, died in April 2010 when their plane crashed while trying to land in Smolensk, Russia. There were no survivors.

Officials of the Interstate Aviation Committee, which investigates crashes in much of the former Soviet Union, said Wednesday that the pilots were pressured to land by Poland’s air force commander, Gen. Andrzej Blasik, who was in the cockpit. They said he had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.06 per cent, enough to impair reasoning.

Blasik’s presence in the cockpit “had a psychological influence on the commander’s decision to rake an unjustified risk by continuing the descent with the predominant goal of landing against the odds,” committee chairwoman Tatiana Anodina told a news conference announcing the final results of the investigation. The report found no fault with Russian air traffic controllers. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/920343--russia-blames-drinking-official-for-poland-president-s-air-crash

Polish Crash Widow Slams Moscow
14 January 2011
Reuters
WARSAW — The widow of the Polish air force chief who died in last year's crash in Smolensk that killed Poland's president accused Moscow of slandering her husband by saying he had been drinking and contributed to the disaster.

In emotional public comments a day after a Russian report on the April 10 airliner accident in which 96 Poles died, Ewa Blasik also attacked the Polish government for what she called its "passive" failure to defend the honor of its officers.

Opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, twin brother of the late President Lech Kaczynski, branded the report by Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee, or IAC, a "joke against Poland."

"The IAC report is a shameful attempt to slander the memory of my husband," Ewa Blasik told a news conference on Thursday. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/polish-crash-widow-slams-moscow/428813.html

.

I guess a few folks around here might think it's a bit odd I haven't posted on this controversy yet, but I haven't really had the time to read the full report. By the way, a link to the English translation is here, I hope.

http://www.mak.ru/russian/investigation ... rt_eng.pdf

And there is more on the MAK site down at the bottom at the link below.

http://www.mak.ru/russian/investigation ... m_101.html

Now, MAK is no slouch at this business of investigating accidents/incidents and I would like to have strong doubts that they would allow politics to get in the way of a report.

Still, I'm not completely ready to set aside the doubts expressed by some that something isn't right with the report that was released. I just need time to study it.

I have read through the report from page 73 to about page 118. Wreckage information starts on page 73 and it is noteworthy that not all of the photos seem to have dates visible. In fact, one photo when clicked on, actually shows that it is made up of two sections that form the image. Cut and paste error? The photos seem to have been taken on the same day and do not show weather beyond some sun and some overcast conditions.

The cockpit recording does capture the presence of someone who was not part of the flight crew. The report also mentions that this person's presence and mention of the main passenger's possible reaction caused a clash of values for the Captain. The Captain's character traits were even reviewed as part of this plane investigation for possible indicators that conformity was important to him.

I saw the timeline that indicated when various agencies or groups were informed or dispatched to attend to the crash site. Ambulances were present for a sum total of about 40min before being dismissed. Apparently the fog must have cleared up enough for at least two helicopter flights in mid-afternoon to the site. The bodies of the deceased were transported by helicopter to the city morgue and a clinic.

Reading about the injuries sustained by the deceased during the plane's rolls and impact was difficult. The non-flight crew person was not belted and his injuries reflected that factor.

Economist readers who saw a recent issue covering Polish politics would have been sharp-eyed to have noticed a reference to events in 2010:

Since taking office PiS has dropped all pretence of moderation. Beata Szydlo, the prime minister, has little clout. The real power is in the hands of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the party’s divisive leader (pictured above, with Ms Szydlo), who was prime minister during PiS’s incompetent term in government in 2005-7. Before the election Ms Szydlo pledged not to give the defence ministry to Antoni Macierewicz, one of the party’s kookiest conspiracy theorists. (Like many in PiS, he believes that a 2010 plane crash that killed Mr Kaczynski’s brother Lech, Poland’s president at the time, was a Russian plot, and that a government investigation that found it was an accident was a cover-up.) Nevertheless Mr Macierewicz, a longtime crony of Mr Kaczynski, was made minister of defence. The government now says it will reopen the investigation into the crash.

There will be an exhumation of the late president Lech Kaczynski's body by the current Polish government led by the late president's twin brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

EVER since a plane carrying then-president Lech Kaczynski crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk on April 10th, 2010, killing all 96 people on board, Poland’s Law and Justice party (PiS) has been consumed by conspiracy theories. Now in power, it is led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late president’s twin brother, who believes that Russia brought the plane down—perhaps with the connivance of PiS’s Polish political enemies. So the government is having the bodies exhumed. An international team of experts will examine them for evidence of foul play. Many of the victims’ families do not want their relatives dug up, but they have been told the choice is not theirs to make.
