Hoboken, New Jersey train crash

Postby rocks on Fri Sep 30, 2016 9:02 am

It happened without warning, without time for passengers to realize they were hurtling headlong into a deadly tragedy, without time for commuters standing on the train station platform to flee.
At the height of morning rush hour, a New Jersey commuter train packed with passengers and traveling way too fast crashed into Hoboken Terminal, killing a woman waiting on the platform and injuring more than 100 others.

Witnesses said the train overran its stopping point, slammed into a bumper block, went airborne and hurtled through a passenger concourse at about 8:45 a.m. at the terminal, one of the busiest transit hubs in the New York area.

New Jersey Transit has not yet installed positive train control, although it does an older safety system. Congress originally required the newer safety system to be installed by the end of 2015, but extended the deadline to the end of 2018.
Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo cautioned people to wait until investigations are completed before concluding PTC would have prevented this incident.

The nightly news talked about this and apparently New Jersey was dragging its heels on this, had not even begun to put it into place. Major question Congress needs to answer is why did they extend the deadline for 3 more years.

The NTSB has argued that PTC technology could have prevented 145 rail accidents since 1969 that killed 288 people and injured 6,574. But it wasn't until 25 people were killed in a Los Angeles commuter train crash that Congress to finally acted in 2008.

NJ Transit currently has a Dec. 31, 2018, deadline for putting this technology in place — which is three years past an earlier blown deadline.

The Transportation Dept. report stated that "NJT has had a contractor on board for several years." It also says NJT has done "partial testing over the course of the past year" on a locomotive and a cab car.

Yesterday when I went over to my cousin's to go with her to lunch, they were reporting on this on MSNBC which she had on.

So sad things such as this happen. Gotta pray for the victims, families and that we find ways to keep things like this from happening (trying to be optimistic...)
