Amtrak train derails onto highway

Postby deja vu on Mon Dec 18, 2017 2:03 pm

An Amtrak train making the first-ever run along a new route hurtled off an overpass Monday near Tacoma, Wash., and spilled some of its cars onto the highway below, killing an undisclosed number of people, authorities said.

Ed Troyer, spokesperson for the Pierce County sheriff, said none of the fatalities were motorists who were in cars and trucks when the train came off the tracks onto I-5. He said emergency responders were working to get survivors out and to area hospitals. Earlier, the sheriff's office said "injuries and casualties" were being reported, but that no numbers were available. It also said that while several vehicles were struck by the derailed train cars, it's not believed motorists were killed.
