How does a Irish beach disappear then years later (33!), it appears again? Definitely one for the marine mystery books.
"[I]n April we had that cold snap over Easter and the wind was coming from the north. It was steady and must have transported sand in from elsewhere," Sean Molloy, manager at Achill Tourism, told The Guardian.

Flooding continues to be an issue in some Canadian provinces. Interior part of British Columbia has a flood risk alert.
Heavy rainfall can be expected throughout B.C.'s interior, continuing throughout the weekend.

States of emergency have been declared in the cities of Kelowna, and West Kelowna, as well as in the community of Fintry Delta.

Hundreds of homes in the region are under an evacuation warning or alert, as heavy downpours continue to damage homes and washout roads.

It happens to be Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada as well. https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/ep-wk/index-en.aspx

Did you know that planes can have a safe operating temperature range and then it's too hot or cold to fly?
In Phoenix, Arizona, some flights were cancelled today as the planes used were going to be too hot to fly.

Hail came along with the rains today in Southern Ontario, Canada. Not good for crops or berries but the downpours
delivered hail twice (little pea size hail) while London got larger pieces of hail.

Landslide in Sichuan province in China is said to have claimed over 100 lives though missing persons are still being sought.
Authorities launched the highest level of disaster response. Relatives of the missing and those suffering losses in the disaster will be given appropriate care, Xi said.
Heavy rainfall is thought to be a possible cause of landslide, which happened about 6 a.m. local time Saturday, according to the provincial government's Land and Resources Department.
A smaller second landslide caused huge rocks to fall onto the village, which made it more difficult for heavy machinery to get to the scene, police team leader Wang Yongbo told CCTV.

Canada/US heat wave updates -

B.C. burns through temperature records as heat continues
Hot spot Thursday was Kamloops at 38.5 C; high temperatures expected through the weekend

CBC News Posted: Jul 07, 2017 10:15 AM PT Last Updated: Jul 07, 2017 10:37 AM PT

Thursday's sweltering weather smashed or tied 20 daily temperature records across B.C., with highs reaching over 39 C in some areas.

The province's hot spot was in Warfield, where the mercury touched 39.7 C, breaking a record of 37.2 C set in 1968.

The heat is expected to continue through the weekend, and special weather statements from Environment Canada remain in effect for most of the southern edge of the province.

Forecasters are urging British Columbians to take precautions against heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses as temperatures are expected soar into the mid-to-high 30s.

Alberta to endure 'exceptional' heat wave for at least a week
Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures as high as 38 C in some parts of province

By Robson Fletcher, CBC News Posted: Jul 03, 2017 4:09 PM MT Last Updated: Jul 04, 2017 2:53 PM MT

Environment Canada is warning Albertans to brace for an extended heat wave that is about to descend on virtually the entire province and last for days — if not weeks.

"These actually, for some places, could very well be record-breaking temperatures," senior Environment Canada climatologist David Phillips said Monday.

"This is clearly exceptional."

Persistent Heat Wave Will Intensify Nation's Worst Current Drought in Dakotas, Montana
By Jon Erdman

weather.com

A heat wave from the northern Plains to parts of the northern Rockies and Great Basin shows little sign of relenting over the next week or more, and that's likely to exacerbate the nation's most rapidly worsening drought in parts of the Dakotas and Montana.

Known as a flash drought for its relatively rapid development, this northern Plains drought developed quickly by late May over a sizable swath of eastern Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

In Sierra Leone, a nighttime mudslide caused high casualities. There were reports of two people being rescued from the mud. Officials plan a mass burial within 48h to contain any cholera risks. There is flooding in Freetown that adds to the health risks.

#SolarEclipse2017 is underway in North America. About 7min to the start of the action here in Southern Ontario.

NASA has 2 planes providing live coverage: https://www.nasa.gov/eclipselive/#NASA+TV+Public+Channel

The Weather Network in Tennessee will be live streaming as well: https://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/live-stream-2017-total-solar-eclipse-from-path-of-totality-august-21/85265/?platform=hootsuite

Wonder what the astronauts on the International Space Station are seeing? http://time.com/4908629/total-solar-eclipse-international-space-station/

Do not look at the sun without special glasses or risk getting solar retinopathy (when the sun burns a spot on your eyes from direct viewing).

I came across a news story explaining how a few different Native American groups are acknowledging the solar eclipse in their cultures:

Hurricane Harvey is flooding Houston, Texas USA this weekend. Conflicting messages from different government leaders did not help residents figure out the best way to cope with the coming weather.

There is a reason for the confusion-Texas learned some lessons from the evacuation for Hurricane Rita, where traffic on the roads led to deaths, congestion and more.
"This disaster's going to be a landmark event," FEMA administrator Brock Long said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday. "This is a storm that the United States has not seen yet."

The dire reports didn't stop President Donald Trump from tweeting Sunday morning that the flood-response efforts were "going well":

"Wow — Now experts are calling #Harvey a once in 500 year flood! We have an all out effort going, and going well!"

Houston area officials who urged people to stay home before the storm may have been remembering that the city government was strongly criticized after the disastrous evacuation before Hurricane Rita in 2005.

https://www.thespec.com/news-story/7523116-harvey-is-causing-epic-catastrophic-flooding-in-houston-why-wasn-t-the-city-evacuated-/

The US President had declared some counties as major disaster areas in order to start funds flowing to FEMA to assist in efforts after Hurricane Harvey.http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/stories/Six-Texas-Counties-Designated-Major-Disaster-Areas-FEMA-Moving-Into-Place-441810133.html

The American Red Cross has opened a donation page to assist people affected by Hurricane Harvey. https://www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-harvey?campname=Harvey&campmedium=aspot
