Spain in readying for the El Gordo (the Big One) lottery that is drawn at Christmas time. Here's an article from last year's (2007) lottery draw:

Spain's "El Gordo" lottery awards $3.2 billion

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's "El Gordo," the world's biggest lottery, gave out 2.2 billion euros ($3.2 billion) in Christmas prizes on Saturday.

El Gordo, Spanish for "The Fat One", is designed so that as many people as possible across Spain get a festive windfall.

The top prize this year was 3 million euros -- going to the series of tickets with the magic number 6,381.

Because the tickets are sold in a series of 10, only those who paid 200 euros for the whole strip get the full prize. A total of 185 series of tickets bear the winning number. http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNew ... 5420071222

What credit crunch? Spaniards cross fingers for record lottery
Spaniards were huddled round television and radio sets on Monday to hear the results of the world's richest lottery in the hope of easing their financial woes amid soaring unemployment and looming recession.

Sales for the annual Christmas lottery known as "El Gordo" or "The Fat One" were down 2.79 percent on last year at 2.78 billion euros (3.90 billion dollars), with around four in five Spanish residents buying tickets.

But the total prize money on offer is around 2.32 billion euros -- around 100 million more than in 2007.

Belgian 'Santa' gives half lottery win to the poor: reports
2 hours, 32 minutes ago
BRUSSELS (AFP) - The Christmas spirit reigns in the Belgium village of Riemst, where a lottery winner is giving half his 7.5 million euro (10.5 million dollar) scoop to the poor, reports said Wednesday.

The Flemish commune's mysterious "Father Christmas," as one newspaper dubbed him, says he intends to share his massive win from the EuroMillions draw on December 12. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/081224/o ... ry_offbeat

Another Santa making the community feel better about sharing! Splendid news for the week.

A large US lottery jackpot just got larger: it is the Powerball!

$80 million Powerball jackpot likely Wed.
Dec. 28, 2008 08:13 AM
Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa - None of the tickets sold for the Powerball game Saturday night matched all six numbers drawn. Saturday's numbers were 12-15-26-31-43.
Powerball: 10.
Power Play: 5.

Players matching all five numbers and the Powerball would have won or shared the $72.3 million jackpot. The prize goes to an estimated $80 million for Wednesday. http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/ ... rball.html

A lot of good things could be done for a community or state with that size of prize. Oh, the IRS takes a portion too.

Here is wishing that a group or several players share the jackpot, so that more money goes around. Else, a single ticket holder will lose privacy over the win for a good year at least.

The $14 million jackpot for Lotto 6-49 in Ontario was not won. Oddly, the next prize level at $159 000 and some dollars had 3 winning tickets.

It does seem there have been two or three jackpots in the past two months that have exceeded $10 million.

Despite not winning a prize on an instant win ticket, a man still gets some money:

More paper for the recycling bin-only had 2 out 7 digits for last night's Super 7 draw (so no free ticket or prize). At least the voluntary tax (lottery ticket cost) will help keep the provincial government in money.

(Laughing.) Dream prizes are fun thoughts but reality needs anchoring too. Should you acquire fame with fortune, do say that you know us! The publicity would bring a stream of curious guests.

Now if you could give out cake slices, I would love to be first in line!
