Fish and the plastics inside of them

Post by fishandchips » Sat Jan 28, 2017 11:18 pm

We've read stories about garbage gyres and all sorts of plastics in waterways and oceans. Now, time to take notice that we are eating fish that are showing signs of microplastics inside of them. How do the plastics impact the fish? What will humans get from a fish dish with extra plastic? The shellfish are getting the plastic intake as well.
Tiny pieces of plastic are making their way into fish and shellfish found at the supermarket, a new study has shown.

The findings are part of a report prepared for the International Maritime Organization, the UN agency responsible for preventing marine pollution.

It's not yet been established what effect these tiny particles of plastic will have on the humans who consume them, the report says.

Researchers do know, however, that microplastics get into aquatic habitats from many different sources, says Chelsea Rochman, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto and co-editor of the report. ... -1.3954947

Considering how important fish is to many countries as a protein source for its peoples, the food source needs protection. The water cannot clean up after all of us on its own.

Warm destinations are dealing with garbage and sewage issues, even near resorts. Bali's beaches keep requiring cleanup.
Workers sent to Jimbaran, Kuta and Seminyak beaches, among the island’s busiest, were reportedly carting off up to 100 tons of garbage each day at the peak of the clean-up, according to AFP news agency. Plastic pollution in Bali has soared in recent years, becoming a major concern for visitors and residents. ... ash-crisis
