When universities silence their faculties

Postby CielOnTap on Wed May 14, 2014 2:00 pm

Post-secondary education institutions are supposed to allow the exchange of ideas and debates.

A just-fired executive director from a School of Public Health at the University of Saskatchewan found out that his remarks against the proposed school merger into the medicine department cost him his job. He was told not to oppose the university's plans and yet he knows the School of Public Health has a directive that requires it to be separate from other faculties.

So employment law is coming into play at the University of Saskatchewan?

Cognitive dissonance at work.

The latest update on the firing is that the university has reinstated tenure for the professor but is offering him a different position, not the one he had before. Also noted is that the professor was a few weeks away from retiring.

The university's decision to reinstate Buckingham came shortly after Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall said he wanted an urgent meeting between the province and the university board.

Wall said he spoke with the board and its chairman, but did not insist on Buckingham being reinstated.

"No, again, there's the principle of the independence of the university," Wall said Thursday at the legislature in Regina.
