Even for employers that are committed to paying their workers more because they believe it’s the right thing to do, it’s not easy, though.

“Small business owners are trying to make a living like everybody else. What they see is the line item of how much they’re paying their employees in a given month. They’re much closer to their costs than big companies,” said David Macdonald, senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alterantives.

Small business owners may overlook the cost of turnover, having to train new employees when the old ones drift to a different job.
There are companies trying to do the right thing by their employees-valuing them and their time. In return, loyalty to the company and customers can help employees see a long-term reason to be engaged at work. Not to mention a share in owning the workplace!

The explanation about Lee Valley Tools' values was good to read. Some of the content is on their site but not the payment ratio information.
