Are smart speakers spying on you?

I do not own one, and have no interest in owning one. Mostly I do not see a reason to own one and I would be very concerned about privacy. The nightly news just did a story on it and how millions are becoming too dependent on these items.

Cellphones and tablets are smart devices as well. One American author who once worked in intelligence circles, was aware that phones could be rigged as speakers so he made a point to place gift phones in the bathroom where the sounds of flushing were the primary things heard.
