Big Bash is the big issue
September 27, 2008

CRICKET Australia regards revolutionising the structure of its domestic Twenty20 tournament, which could feature Indian stars within two years, as the biggest challenge on the board's horizon.

"We're not at the stage of having a concept to take to the states but we hope to be at that stage in the next few months," said CA spokesman Peter Young. "The concept of overseas players has been discussed as an element, not as the core focus, and a number of franchise models have been pushed around on the white board. It could be that the Twenty20 Big Bash will remain unchanged for the next two summers while we go through the thinking Australian cricket needs to go through."

INDIAN opener Virender Sehwag has forecast Australia's annihilation with the same simple audacity he employs in his batting.

Sehwag, identified by Australian captain Ricky Ponting as one of the main dangers to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defence, predicted a comfortable 3-1 series victory to India to send off the country's ageing champions in what looms as their final battle against Australia.

New Zealand v Bangladesh
New Zealand have a huge slice of humble pie to swallow after losing the opening one-day cricket international to Bangladesh last night.

They were outplayed with the bat, the ball and in the field as Bangladesh scored 202 for three to win the match by seven wickets at Mirpur and snatch a shock 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Nabi and Ahmadzai inspire Afghanistan to title
ICC
11 October 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A brilliant spell of spin bowling from player of the tournament Mohammad Nabi helped Afghanistan clinch the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4 by 57 runs.

Nabi took 4-9 as Hong Kong was 122 all out, but it was Rais Ahmadzai who took the man-of-the-match award for the second consecutive game, meaning that Afghanistan has now won successive Pepsi ICC World Cricket League events following its win in Jersey in Division 5 in May.

Good bit of sporting news to put Afghanistan forward in another context. Congratulations to all of the teams which played in the tournament!

Chance reading of major daily newspaper today led to the discovery of a cricket event held north of Toronto this past weekend. Here's the final article on the event:

Sri Lanka defeated last year's World Cup runner-up Pakistan to capture the Al Barakah Twenty/20 International series yesterday at King City, while Canada was blown out by Zimbabwe.

Losers by 33 runs in the World Cup and by three wickets last Saturday, the Sri Lankans – led by unorthodox right-arm spinner Ajantha Mendis' three-wicket haul – etched out a five-wicket win with six balls to spare before an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 10,000.

The special reporting on the event was done by another contributor prior to and during the weekend event:
A taste of top-class cricket

The much-anticipated Twenty20 cricket tournament that was to have taken place in early August finally gets underway Friday at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club ground in King City.

When the four-day tournament was originally planned, Canada was to be joined by Pakistan, Bangladesh and the West Indies. Sponsorship issues saw the first incarnation of the tournament scrapped, though Cricket Canada insisted it would be rescheduled for October. http://www.thestar.com/article/512965
