I had seen an item about two days ago that the father of the deceased luger will not be filing a lawsuit. I assume that the family is grateful to have the deceased's body returned home, so that was one expense that would not need to be covered by relatives.

He made the Olympic team on his own merits and then denied him a chance at a medal. Not any more, he took Gold today. The Olympic team didn't medal and now we will never know if they could have if they had just given him a chance.

*****

WHISTLER, B.C. - Brian McKeever will never forget his Olympic disappointment, but the Paralympic gold medal he won Monday helped remind him why he keeps racing.

McKeever's victory in the 20-kilometre cross-country ski race for the visually impaired gave Canada its first gold medal of the Winter Paralympics. The win came in an event where McKeever had finished second in his two previous Paralympics. "That meant a lot," said McKeever, who was almost 42 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. "That was the one we were waiting to win. "It's been eight years in the making. That's the one we really wanted."

Bashing and smashing like an old Philadelphia Flyers NHL team of some reknown, Canada downed Norway 5-0 on Tuesday night to set up a sledge hockey semifinal meeting with Japan at the 2010 Paralympics.

With some thunderous body checks and the occasionally sneaky punch, the aggressive Canadians, backed by another raucous crowd at UBC Thunderbird Arena, physically dominated the Norwegians at almost every turn. Just call the maple leaf gang the Broadway Street Bullies.

The Thunderbird crowd must be bringing out the best in them. Next in line the Japanese in the semi final. Hopefully that will be a closer scoring game.

On a Royal note: TV news have announced that the Royals are coming to Vancouver/Whistler sometime this week. It seems to be a last minute visit because usually you hear about it months before they arrive. It's of special interest to the press because it is Prince Edward, his wife and 2 daughters. You never see their girls and there has always been speculation as to the health of the first daughter.

WHISTLER, B.C.—It was a golden finish to Canada’s best Winter Paralympics ever. Brian McKeever of Canmore, Alta., won his third gold medal on the last day of the Paralympics Sunday with a victory in the one-kilometre cross-country sprint for the visually impaired. It was an emotional victory for the legally blind skier who came into the Paralympics feeling the frustration of being denied the chance to race at the Olympics.

“We’re very satisfied with how it went,” said McKeever, who races with his brother Robin acting as guide. “Especially with the whole Olympic fiasco, it was nice to come back and erase the bad memories of this place and have a fun moment at the end.”

A bad decision not to let him race in the other Olympics earlier in Vancouver. Perhaps that team would have placed higher if he had been allowed to ski. At least he has a nice gold haul to take home.

Royals are going to British Columbia? I'm behind on the news. Though the Count & Countess of Wessex have a daughter (she has a health condition that her parents were keen to keep out of the public vie) and a son, I'm surprised of their interest in attending. It is Prince Edward's sis, Anne, that had an Olympic connection as a former athlete and board membership of some kind.

Georgian hamlet grieves for son lost at Olympics
It took a village to raise a racer

March 28, 2010
Mitch Potter
BAKURIANI, GEORGIA–He raced against all odds, with a country on his shoulders and a village in his heart.

A poor boy from the Caucasus Mountains in a rich man's sport. Yet a boy with the delicate art of luge in his blood, one who spent half his young life preparing to reclaim a storied family legacy of three generations of Soviet-era champions.

Determined not only to become a champion, but also to be first to do so wearing the colours of Georgia.

And here in the hometown of Nodar Kumaritashvili, less than 45 days after that tragic nanosecond half a world away, his shattered family wants the world to know it. They want Canadians, especially, to understand their son was ready for the Games of Vancouver. http://olympics.thestar.com/2010/article/786532--georgian-hamlet-grieves-for-son-lost-at-olympics

Olympic items go on sale
By BOB MACKIN, QMI Agency
Last Updated: March 27, 2010 4:21pm
DELTA, B.C. -- One person’s junk could be another person's Olympic gold.

The public sale of 200,000 items used by organizers of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics began Saturday in a 20,000 square foot section of a suburban warehouse complex.

The British Columbia government’s Asset Investment Recovery division expects thousands of people to jostle for Sharp 19-inch high definition TVs for $99, Acer computer monitors for $79, leather Hudson’s Bay Company sofas for $250, and Olympic torch relay tracksuits for $149.

Sorry, no red mittens, but there are workforce backpacks for $29.99 and fake snowboards used by closing ceremony performers for $5, with their dance moves still attached. http://www.winnipegsun.com/sports/vancouver2010/news/2010/03/27/13380031.html

Computer monitors sound like a deal! How old are they?

Who paid for the stuff first? Taxpayers definitely will want their money restored to government services. May there be organizations able to buy some items to update their own IT stock.
Frozen? Not I. Love hot drinks and ice rinks.

True Fish&chips, we payed for the stuff in the first place, but probably most do not realize this. Probably some might start noting some costs like taxes to you hame it going up sort of sneaky like. Thing is to remember is that we will be place for this, as tax payers, for the next 25 or 35 yrs for look how long it took the poor city of Montreal people to pay for the special pace to be used for baseball (the summer before Olympics) all those darn years, but the mayor that pulled that one on them was probably dead or next thing to it.

There were no deals at that sale according to the news. Used 40 inch tvs were only 100.00 less than larger new ones in the stores. They didn't tell anyone what was available or that the so called deals were not really deals. People lined up before the sun came up and in bad weather to find out about that little detail. No guarantee any of the stuff is in good working order either.

Vanoc and the BC Government are looking for any way to get quick cash to pay the bills and they are not even close to doing that.

This bill will not be paid in full for many many years. As for the Government services they cut to help fund the Olympics, they are gone for good and more are going to follow. But they are helping to fund two new wood cabins at some camping site. I'm sure all the people that are suffering from the cuts will be thrilled to know that their loss is a tourists gain.
