IRB to consider change to replacement rule

David Hands, Rugby Correspondent
At the conclusion of last week's International Rugby Board conference on the experimental law variations, the board dropped quietly into the water the issue of uncontested scrums. Next month's IRB council meeting will decide whether to accept a proposal by the Federation Francaise de Rugby (FFR) that the number of replacements should go up to eight so as to cover every front-row position.

There is more. Should circumstances prevent a side fielding a complete front row, forcing the referee to go to uncontested scrums for safety's sake, they would not be permitted to bring on a replacement to keep 15 players on the field. The application of such a law has been on trial in France with dramatic effect: IRB sources say that, last season, one in three games in the top two divisions were affected by uncontested scrums whereas this season, there have only been two.

Rugby: Hermance end PLO's unbeaten run
by Marcus Berry
Geneva - 27 April 2009 | 11:25
After 11 wins on the trot, Swiss A league leaders Geneva PLO finally come unstuck in Hermance on Saturday. The 20-11 scoreline features three tries from the home side who move up to second place in the table still 15 points behind their adversaries. In other matches, Stade Lausanne put Avusy to the sword and Bern are taken to the cleaners in Yverdon while on Sunday, Nyon suffer a pounding in Zurich.
Last week, Geneva PLO coach, John Etheridge told Swisster that he suspected that Saturday’s game in Hermance would be their "hardest of the season" and so it proved with the league leader’s coming off second best, 20-11, in a rough encounter which saw a three-to-one try count in favour of the home side.

“We didn’t play to the level that we have played to this season and they were probably more motivated than we were,” said Etheridge. “We made too many errors though the result will be very good for the boys because it will let them know that they aren’t world champions of anything yet.” http://www.swisster.ch/en/news/sports/rugby-hermance-end-plo-s-unbeaten-run_123-1596944

Toronto has its own team-the Toronto Wolf Pack!

Toronto’s newest team is the Toronto Wolfpack, which plans to play in the third tier of English rugby league in 2017.

The owners are billing it as the first transatlantic professional sports team.

In fact, the Wolfpack will be based in England for the most part, playing home games in three-week chunks at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium.

The new team will be the 16th in the third-tier Kingstone Press League 1, which has 12 teams from England, two from Wales and one from France.

Let's see: there's professional soccer (football), basketball, lacrosse, football, hockey and baseball in the city. Rugby has landed!
