The Dutch team has a no drinking at competitions policy. Yet one team member admitted to indulging in drink and as a result he's sent home from Rio de Janeiro. He'll forfeit his place in the rings final.

Noticed yesterday morning that the English and French CBC stations were covering different events: swimming in English and women's singles in tennis in French. Love the choice of picking which sport to watch.

Yahoo has a blog explaining things at the Games such as why some medal ceremonies don't involve flowers (it's an environmental factor that features in many things done at the Rio events): https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/rio-mystery-solved-why-dont-olympic-medal-winners-get-flowers-195907726.html

A Toronto Star journalist takes one of the tourism tours of a nearby favela and ponders the pros and cons of such tourism:

Why the water's green at the diving pool and now the water polo area as well:

The real reason the pools have been looking off-the pool chemical supplies ran low/out! And other things running low at the Rio 2016 sporting events:
https://www.thestar.com/sports/olympics/2016/08/11/rio-olympics-are-turning-blue-over-supply-shortages.html

What is inside those medals? By the way, medals are considered income for American athletes according to the IRS.

I have not watched any coverage today but as it's raining hard right now, tv watching along with some snacks seems like a brilliant idea.

Spotted news that the sole Russian track & field athlete allowed to compete just got banned. The athlete is appealing the ban.

Here's a CBC video about how Russian athletes are viewing the doping scandal that impacts who gets to compete at #Rio2016:

More to the green water explanation-too much chemical used.
In a surprise press conference at the venue, Rio 2016 spokesman Mario Andrada presented yet another explanation for the strange mutating of the pool water from crystal blue to algae-green this week: on Aug. 5, 80 liters of hydrogen peroxide were mistakenly put in the pool manually by a local contractor, which neutralized the chlorine’s ability to kill organics.

http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/rio-2016/murky-olympic-pool-is-being-drained-of-green-water-because-of-visibility-issues

I recall seeing an online item about someone offering to send in a pool chlorination expert to Rio when the issue first was noticed this week.

Body-shaming of athletes at the Games is receiving much attention. Canadian athletes have been speaking out against appearance comments and making efforts to have reporters and spectators focus on the athletes' skills and performances.
Mexican gymnast Alexa Moreno received plenty of negative comments about her appearance on Twitter during her performance in the Rio Olympics, and that's a pain many Canadian athletes know.

The CBC explored the subject of body image and body-shaming for athletes in an excellent longform feature by Jacqueline Doorey earlier this month, which saw plenty of Canadian athletes speak candidly about their own struggles with body image. Amongst them was the now two-time Olympic gold medalist and Rio flag-bearer Rosie MacLennan:

Ryan Lochte, an American swimmer, and three of his teammates were robbed last Saturday and they filed a police report. Lochte has left Brazil, yet a Brazilian judge sought the seizures of the passports for Lochte and one teammate as the judge noted they gave two versions of the incident.

Looks like they all lied and were vandals, not victims. One of the divers has confirmed this, so given that they should all lose their medals. Lying to officials, vandalism should be enough for that to happen.

Common drunken thugs, and no one would have known if they had kept quiet. Their lies have unravelled and they owe their hosts an apology as well as loss of medals.

Watching the Rio director of communications and the says it was just kids having fun. I'm sorry, but Lochte is 32 years old, not a kid, just a thug that lies to authorities from the US and Rio. Excusing this as harmless prank, kids being kids is very wrong. Grown men and should live with the consequences. Like losing their endorsements and medals for their behavior. If they were not famous they would be in jail.

For the women's soccer bronze medal, Team Canada is playing against Team Brazil. Twitter posts indicate that Brazilian fans have filled up the standing room seating area of the stadium to support their athletes.

Canada is leading, 2-0, at the 62nd minute of the match.

Readers of Speak-Ez Forums may recall that the Milan Expo in Italy last year had a focus on food. There was a chef that had taken leftover food from each day of the Expo to run a free food kitchen. That same chef is doing the same thing in Rio, with Olympic catered foods, to run a dinner kitchen for the homeless. Given how food shortages have noted within the media areasof the Games, it is amazing to read how being homeless can mean a better meal thanks to this kitchen being operated during the sporting event to help people get fed.
Bottura said he was inspired by Pope Francis’s advocacy for the poor and modelled his project on a similar one he organized last year in an abandoned theatre during the Milan world’s fair. His aim is to educate people about food waste in order to help feed the 800 million in the world who are hungry.

It’s a message that resonates in Rio.
Over the past year, as Brazil plunged into its deepest recession in decades, the city’s homeless population has struggled. In June, facing a financial calamity, Rio’s state government had to close or cutback service at 16 meal centres. The splurge on the Olympics has only heightened a sense of abandonment among the homeless, with many reporting being repeatedly removed by police from the city’s recently cleaned-up Lapa district, where Bottura’s restaurant is located.

In contrast to the government-run centres, where meals are served on prisonlike food trays with throwaway cups, the RefettoRio is an epicurean’s delight, complete with designer wood tables, oversized photos of the staff by French artist JR and a long mural of the Last Supper dripping in chocolate by Vik Muniz, one of Brazil’s top-selling artists.

Thank you, Massimo Botturo, for sharing your heart and your talents in Rio!

The story told by US swimmer Ryan Lochte about a robbery in Rio has been changed due to different testimony given by the other swimmers, video showing the swimmers at the gas station in question and more. Twitter has been hot on the story with posts from various media sources about the twists and turns of the case.

Brazilian sports fans have not always shown sporting behaviour at the Games. A French athlete that won a silver medal in pole-vaulting was targeted by vocal displeasure expressed by Brazilians in the audience. https://www.thestar.com/sports/olympics/2016/08/18/brazil-gets-gold-for-crowd-nastiness-at-rio-olympics-dimanno.html
