St. Catharines will have a new outlet mall, Outlet Collection at Niagara, opening on May 15. http://outletcollectionniagara.com/
It is within 30 minutes' drive of Niagara Falls' Canada One factory outlet mall and the US border (where a NY state outlet mall is having an exterior renovation).

So far, I have not seen coupons/or promotional offers for the new complex, which will have a motorcoach area and have shuttle service to the neighbouring hotel as part of a package. However, there is no dedicated municipal transit service to the new mall.

One of the new-to-Canada stores is Chico's Outlet, a womenswear store. The closest retail store is in the US, in Syracuse, NY. I do hope the Chico's Outlet carries most of their range in their store. (As I experienced on my trip to Toronto Premium Outlets last fall, Restoration Hardware only brought their solid coloured towels to the store, not their patterned towels that were on the brand's website. Major disappointment.)
Other outlet stores include Michael Kors and White House Black Market (which only opened in the Toronto area late last year).

How using a grocery store loyalty card can help with a food-related outbreak-researchers can notice a pattern of similar or same food items by card users in order to narrow down suspect foods behind the illness.

A case of hepatitis A in British Columbia involved researchers looking into food purchases which led to a frozen fruit mixture being identified as the likely suspect. I did not know that frozen pomegranate seeds were used in fruit mixes nor that hepatitis A can spread through frozen fruit.

Disease detectives in British Columbia were able to spot and halt an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in that province in early 2012 by comparing the foods the infected people had bought in previous months.

Those food purchasing histories were compiled from their grocery story loyalty cards; pomegranate seeds in a frozen fruit mix were eventually identified as the source of the infection.

The public health investigators reported their success in a study published Thursday in Eurosurveillance, the online public health journal of the European Centre for Disease Control.

First day of summer is a tad cool but don't let that stop you from checking out summer picnic or bbq supplies or sales on spring/summer clothing! Waiting until July is really a futile prospect unless you are a specialty size that does not sell out in the stores.
Canada Day is coming up so hot dog toppings, hot dogs, burgers, flags, t-shirts with Canada on them, Off products against mosquitoes and camping gear are items likely marked down now. You may start seeing patio furniture sales slowly occurring-if you like a set, don't hesitate if it is in stock at your local vendor.

Sewists can look for dressy fabrics and special occasion specials, summer cottons and bright outdoor fabrics as fabric stores want to move their spring/summer stock into your sewing rooms and homes! You may find deals on packaged curtain panels, patio serving ware and beverage accessories, plus patio lanterns and candle holders.

End of July, store flyers began promoting back to school/campus sales for families planning on stocking up on school supplies, dormitory furnishings (check school dormitory rules-you may have limitations on which appliances you can bring or have to obtain them through the school supplier) and things like laptops or snacks. Cannot August be two weeks of summer before reminders of back to school appear mid-month? No, stores want to move that merchandise.

For anyone wanting to upgrade or replace their personal computer/laptop/tablet, this month is a good one to research for deals, features, prices and warranty support. Flyer prices for laptops (note prices are for Southern Ontario, Canada and prices may be different in other regions of the country):

(Storage options may vary-hard drive or online; you may wish to research cables for recharging portable electronics as some cables charge portables faster than others.

In case you are craving cookies, trail mix bars, or juice in boxes, this month is a good one to find deals and buy some quantities for back to school/back to fall routines.

Summer clothing will be hard to find at this time-the clearance sections of stores might have the remaining items if they have not been moved to liquidation centres or outlet locations.

Some new fall clothing will have promotional discounts. Some stores will offer a set discount if you spend a minimum amount in their store or in specific departments. Even if you need a warm coat or new boots, you may be able to obtain them now before you need them while stock is in. Inquire at your preferred stores prior to heading out or check online if the websites offer store stock checks.

Don't forget to enter the back to school contests if the prizes appeal (gift cards, computer equipment, bedroom furnishings or kitchen supplies)!

The IKEA 2014 catalogue has some desks and furnishings on sale this week that would suit study spaces and offices.

It's late summer harvest time. There is the possibility you can help someone harvest their tree fruit crop with the prospect of having some of the yield given to you. See if your neighbours in long-established neighbourhoods with gardens and trees are agreeable to your helping them. Apples and pears are the top two fruits still available to pick. Peaches may still be ready to pick but most of its cycle is now concluded.

Garden vegetables-zucchini and cucumbers are finishing their growing cycles. Squash/pumpkin still have some time before harvest. Root vegetables can stay out a little longer. It's already time for garlic if its not been pulled. Soon it's time to plant sets for next year's garlic crop.

Turkeys, vegetables and baking supplies are featured in current grocery flyers as Canadian Thanksgiving approaches on October 13. If your store has a loyalty program, there may be coupons, points offers or specials offered if you spend a certain amount on your shopping.

Halloween candies and decor are also dominating flyers. See if there are weekly specials for the things you are seeking. Sometimes weekend sales have the best offers. Popular brands-stock up when you see them, as you cannot count on finding them closer to month's end.

It's not Thanksgiving Stateside for another month but hey, I'm willing to make a large pot pie to use up my vegetables and meat this weekend. Dry run for next month-not one to carve poultry but all-in-one dishes just make life easier. Will have to get some salad mix and tarts to round out the effort.
Going to make a batch of beer basted veggies on my grill pan and put them into the pot pie.

Holiday food offerings will be rolling out in flyers for Christmas here in Canada. US readers will be getting many tips and recipes for US Thanksgiving in November (fourth Thursday, Nov.28) as well as Christmas food promotions and gift ideas.

There are likely coupons or discount codes coming out for minimum spending levels at various merchants, in stores or for online shopping. Flyers might offer some coupons for store use as well.

Fall leaves remain in many areas (unless snow or another weather system has moved in) so the DIY crafters are likely finding branches and leaves and other natural items for home decor or table decor projects. Craft stores have synthetic versions of nature so you can look to them for supplies if your own yard does not yield inspiration.

Clothing loyalty programs might be offering Friends & Family type sales events at stores, with a bigger discount for cardholders over non-cardholders. If clothing is on your holiday wish list, plan on shopping within the next 7 days. Don't forget that US Thanksgiving Day is coming up in three weeks, so clothing stores will be busy helping shoppers find what's in stock.

Furniture stores also have sales because entertaining could be on the minds of many. Perhaps a sofa needs replacing for the overnight guests. Or the dining room table needs to be bigger/smaller. Seating is always a priority-need some more chairs? Or something for the library? Lighting is important and so are energy-efficient bulbs.

Well, any chances of Halloween candy clearances are truly done by this point. Christmas cookie tins and treats have taken over shelves-the sweets are quick gifts to buy if you are visiting anyone, need something at work for coffee/tea breaks or want to thank someone for a deed done.
