Animal World Tales

That's what we see from space. Let's try to keep it that way.

New video was shared online of BC orca whales passing over a stony bed--the thinking is that the whales either need a massage or are trying to remove smaller creatures from their skins. Activity is rarely caught on video so there is much interest in seeing the whales take to the stones.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-orcas-rare-beach-rubbing-behaviour-caught-on-video-1.2939355

Scientists say this behaviour is almost entirely unique to northern resident orca whales and is so uncommon that it's hard to study.

They aren't sure why the northern resident whales exhibit this behaviour, although some have theorized it's a learned habit passed down from one generation to the next.

From Orcas to one sick bear -

A four-year-old wild black bear that was found paralyzed and emaciated in a field in northern Ontario underwent an MRI in the Toronto area Tuesday in what is thought to be a Canadian first. Hope, the bear, was found by a local family in Fort Frances, Ont., in December and came to the attention of Mike McIntosh, who runs the Bear With Us sanctuary in Huntsville, Ont.

Hope they can find out what is causing this, next up is a spinal tap and maybe some answers as to what is making the bear so sick. Given the pesticides out there and humans encrouching on their territory, it's a wonder there are not more bears in this condition. At least it now has a fighting chance.

Mind that you don't pet a stray farmed bison if it escapes its usual area and shows up outside your door! A big animal with horns, it can be dangerous and it can move quickly.

A whale in Hawaii spent eight days entangled with a fishing line and humans managed to free the tail of the rope.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/humpback-whale-freed-from-fishing-lines-after-8-day-struggle-1.2966832
A 45-tonne humpback whale tangled in heavy fishing line in Hawaiian waters for more than a week has been freed.

A crew from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary on Saturday used a pole equipped with a knife to saw the line free, West Hawaii Today reported.

Several hundred feet of heavy line used for hoisting crab pots was cut away, said sanctuary spokesman Ed Lyman.

Maybe the whale will be more careful in taking "fast food" when it sees a line or net in the future.

Seattle Aquarium's Ink the octupus provided a social media event by reaching over his tank. Many cellphone users filmed the effort.

There is concern about the cause of death for a show dog that participated in last week's Crufts show in the United Kingdom. The dog's owners don't believe someone at the show poisoned the dog.
Three-year-old Thendara Satisfaction, known as Jagger, died Friday, shortly after returning to Belgium following an appearance at the world-famous Crufts dog show in the central English city of Birmingham last week. A veterinarian performed a post-mortem examination and found pieces of meat laced with poison in his stomach.

The vet “found cubes of meat, some sort of beef, like steak, and they had been sewn up with poison inside,” one of the owners, Jeremy Bott, told the BBC. “She thinks there were possibly two or three different types of poison,” one of which was a slug killer.

Police in both Belgium and Britain are aware of the incident, but authorities said they haven’t been asked to investigate. The Kennel Club, which organizes Crufts, is awaiting a toxicology report on the dog’s death — a report that could take days.

Seattle can claim that a miniature pig outshines her dog peers at dog obedience school. Her handler says the pig trains easily with consistent rules and guidance and lettuce.

There are dog owners that want their four-legged "fur babies" pampered as well as them when the humans go away on vacations. Two businesses are charging hotel rates to provide the lifestyle to which the dogs may have at home to enjoy at the "resort."

The $199-a-night all inclusive package comes with poolside suites, organic treats from the mini bar, a swag bag and cuddle time. There are heated floors and flat-screen TVs aplenty; spa services cost extra.

No, this isn’t the Four Seasons. It’s Park9, a luxury pet resort that recently opened shop in Toronto.

The indoor playground is buzzing Thursday afternoon as a dozen dogs check in for the Easter long weekend. Big, small, furry and trim, they trot around the bright, gymnasium-sized room, jumping on slides and through hoops and tossing around bright orange balls, barking all the while. Several take a dip in the pool next door

Here's a good reason to be supportive of keeping oceans clean and free of waste: there are really smart creatures living in the oceans!

This whale likes interacting with people on boats.

The whale pokes its head above the surface of the Salish Sea, playfully spraying streams of water into the air — and at her stunned human admirers.

“Can you see us? Are you saying hi?” MacIntyre squeals. “No, no, don’t blow. No, no!”

And with that, MacIntyre met Windy – “The Friendly Humpback” – off the coast of British Columbia last week.

“I think she’s doing this on purpose!” someone else on the boat exclaims, as Windy circled around and underneath them for over an hour.

Visiting national parks on vacation is part of the summer experience. However, questing for a selfie with wildlife including bison is a big no-no!

If you'd never want to run with the bulls in Spain, why risk a goring or worse in a park?
