Turkey earthquake: At least 14 dead

Post by deja vu » Fri Jan 24, 2020 8:12 pm

At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds hurt in a powerful earthquake in eastern Turkey, officials say.

The 6.8 magnitude quake, centred on the town of Sivrice in Elazig province, caused buildings to collapse and sent
residents rushing into the street.

Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Syria, Lebanon and Iran.

Earthquakes are common in Turkey - about 17,000 people died in a massive quake in the western city of
Izmit in 1999. Friday's quake struck at about 20:55 local time (17:55 GMT).

Does anyone know what the building codes are in Turkey? Given the images, have to wonder if they do have strict
codes or do quake proofing upgrades.

I have here an article put out by a group under the wing of the United Nations:

Turkey: New building code for earthquake resilience

Down below the article is this:
Earthquake building code was published in Official Gazette on 18th of March, 2018 and will become legally effective on 1st of January, 2019. It will contribute to earthquake safe settlement and construction.
Might make note of the "Important Links" below the article.

And that is under the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction /// https://www.undrr.org/

As for the latest news out of Turkey:

Turkish News ( - http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/ - ) BUT to find information about the lives lost and who is in need of help because of the earthquake one has to sort of search on their landing page and I found it down the page a bit under the "Most Popular" column of news stories/headlines. I'm not so sure what to make of that.

EDIT: Okay, I suppose I made a mistake in thinking the main story was sort of hidden. It seems there is a kind of jump line stream at the top and the first one is the earthquake story. Problem is, if one lands on that page when another story is showing, as I suppose happened when I first landed on that page.

Anyway, here is that page/link specifically about the earthquake:

Turkey quake kills at least 22, rescuers dig for survivors

That page was dated January 25 2020 11:06:00 when I retreaved that link.
